WordPress 7.0 "Armstrong" is here: AI in the Core and Smarter Collaboration
It took a while, partly due to a deliberate pause and stabilization round in 2025, but the wait is over. WordPress 7.0, with the aptly jazz codename "Armstrong", has been officially launched. This is not a routine update with a few minor bug fixes; it is a fundamental shift in how we build, manage, and populate websites with content.
The three absolute pillars of this release? Built-in artificial intelligence, seamless asynchronous collaboration, and a much-needed modernization of the backend. Here is what is new and what you need to know before you hit that update button.
1. AI is now integrated into the Core (The Connectors API)
The biggest revolution in WordPress 7.0 is the introduction of a provider-agnostic AI Client and Abilities API. In plain language: WordPress now has a built-in central distribution box for AI. Via the new Settings > Connectors menu, you can directly link API keys from major AI models such as OpenAI, Google (Gemini), and Anthropic (Claude). Themes and plugins can then directly access this central AI power. As a result, not every standalone plugin needs to build its own AI connection, making your site lighter, more secure, and more privacy-friendly.
2. A Modern Admin Dashboard & DataViews
As soon as you log in, you'll notice it immediately: the backend feels a lot less '2010s'. The dashboard has received a subtle visual makeover with a more modern color palette, sleeker typography, and smooth animations (view transitions) between screens.
Furthermore, page and post management has been revamped with DataViews. You can now view your content lists like a flexible app: sorting, grouping, and filtering happen lightning fast without the entire page needing to reload. Additionally, you can instantly activate the new Command Palette with Cmd + K (Mac) or Ctrl + K (Windows), allowing you to navigate through your entire site blindly.
3. Advanced Collaboration with "Notes"
With Phase 3 of the Gutenberg project, WordPress is moving towards a shared creative cloud environment. Although true live real-time co-authoring (typing with multiple people simultaneously) is still being developed behind the scenes for a later update, 7.0 opens the door wide for asynchronous teamwork.
With the improved Notes functionality, you can select specific blocks or text fragments in the editor and leave comments or feedback for team members directly (think of the comment function in Google Docs). You tag colleagues with a simple @ mention. 4. New Blocks and Design Freedom
For site builders, Armstrong brings handy native extensions:
New blocks: A built-in Breadcrumb block (Breadcrumbs) and an Icon block (Icons) have finally been added. No more heavy plugins needed for simple icons.
Lightbox in the Gallery: Images in a gallery now open by default in a beautiful, full-page pop-up slideshow.
Video backgrounds in Cover blocks: You can now embed videos directly as backgrounds in your covers.
Font Library for everyone: Managing and uploading fonts via the Font Library now also works on 'classic' and hybrid themes, no longer just on Full Site Editing (FSE) block themes.
Important warning: Do not update immediately on live sites!
Although WordPress 7.0 is fantastic, it is a major architectural update. Furthermore, the minimum recommended PHP version has been raised to PHP 8.3 (although it technically runs from 7.4). Many third-party plugins still require a final compatibility check.
Our urgent advice: Create a backup first and always test the update on a staging environment (test environment) first. Pay particular attention to ensuring that your shopping carts, forms, and critical plugins continue to function flawlessly.
